The photo already had six thousand likes.
I stood in the hospital doorway and read the comments while Brent slept behind me.
"Get it, queen."
"Mob princess lost her toy."
"Lodestar is a woman now."
I went down to the waiting room.
My father was asleep sitting up, his chin on his chest, the paper cup still upright in his hand.
Dario was awake.
I gave him my phone.
He looked at the picture for a long time, at my signature on the bedspread and the ruby lying across it.
"You said last night she had a piece of paper," he said.
"She does."
"Tell me what's on it."
"Not yet," I said. "She's going to try to sell it. I want to be standing there when she does."
At noon I stood in the back room of the bakery in Bensonhurst.
I wasn't asked to sit.
Nobody was ever asked to sit.
My father walked his underboss in through the kitchen door himself, one hand on his arm.
The underboss had a bruise down one side of his face.
His gold chain was gone.
