Chapter 11: The Boss in the Taped Shoe

I went down to the main floor in my black cleaning uniform with the tape still on my shoe.

Dario walked one step behind me.

I had asked him to, and he had not argued.

Every dealer, cashier, cocktail waitress, cook and guard in the building was crowded around the bar.

Hundreds of faces, all turned toward me.

Somebody had put an upturned crate beside the roulette wheel, and I climbed on it.

My knees were shaking.

I put one hand on my stomach, and the baby kicked.

"My name is Callie Pitkin Corvino," I said.

The whole floor was so quiet I could hear the slot machines.

"The other night I slapped Mr. Corvino in the VIP suite, and some of you saw it. Since then, most of you have heard that I'm his wife."

A few people laughed nervously.

"I'm also the owner of the Silver Lark."

Nobody laughed.

A dealer in the front row dropped his deck of cards.

"Every share and the license are in my name," I said. "Mr. Corvino put them there the day after our wedding, and he told nobody, and he told me last. I started on the night cleaning crew this week because I was broke and pregnant and did not know any of that."

I looked from face to face.

"So I know what the floor looks like at three in the morning. I know which carpet is the worst to scrub. And I know who sat at a table in this building this week and laughed at a hungry woman."

A man's laugh came from the back of the room.

It was loud and mocking, and I knew it.

Rocco came through the crowd with six men from the VIP floor behind him.

He was clapping slowly.
