Chapter 17: Suspended

The Gaming Control Board met on the ninth floor of a county building, in a room with a long wooden bench and a flag.

I wore my black cleaning uniform.

Dario sat behind me, one row back, and every few minutes his hand came to rest between my shoulder blades and stayed there.

Three board members sat at the bench.

The chair was a thin man in his sixties with a gray mustache, and he did not look at me when I stood.

"Mrs. Corvino," he said. "You are the licensee of record for the Silver Lark."

"I am."

"The board received a complaint that the holder of record had not been seen on the property in nine months."

"I'm here now."

"So you are. But a second matter has been raised."

A lawyer in a blue suit stood up at the side table.

He was Aldo's lawyer, and he did not hide it.

"Mr. Chairman, the renewal filed last spring carries a signature in a round, neat hand. The signature on this morning's sign-in sheet is a large left-handed scrawl."

He held up two pages.

"The licensee either did not sign the renewal, or she is not the person on the sheet."

A murmur went through the room.

I felt my stomach drop, because it was true.

Lowell had signed those renewals in my old handwriting, practiced for months on the bank pages, and I had never known.

I had signed left-handed on the casino floor in front of four hundred people, to save Dee.

Now Aldo's lawyer was using it to take my license.

"I did sign this morning," I said. "I signed my name."

"But not as you signed the renewal."

"No."

"Then who signed the renewal?"

I looked at the chair.

"Lowell Hatch signed it. He's the man who stole one and a half million dollars from me, and he's in jail for it."

"That is an accusation."
