Chapter 20: Through the Floor

"Ambulance," Dario said to the head of security. "Now. To the front."

"It's four minutes out, sir."

"Then I'll meet it."

He slid one arm under my knees and the other behind my back and stood up with me.

"Dario, put me down. I can walk."

"No."

"The elevator is right there."

"The elevator is slow, and the front doors are straight through the floor." His voice shook. "Let me carry you. I have been the man who didn't come for three months. I am not doing it again."

The alarm was still screaming.

I put my arm around his neck and my face against his shirt.

"Fine," I said. "But if I get sick on you, it's your fault."

The doors from the garage opened onto the back of the main floor.

It was two in the morning on a Thursday, and the Silver Lark was full.

Dealers stood behind their tables, and a hundred gamblers held cards and drinks.

The alarm had stopped the roulette wheel, and every head turned.

Dario walked into the open with his wife in his arms.

I had never seen him walk like that.

He did not hurry, and he did not slow down.

The head of security went ahead of us, and the guards spread out into a line.

Nobody told them to.

A dealer I had never spoken to pulled the rope aside.

Another one cleared a path between two blackjack tables with a flat hand.

The cocktail girls stopped with their trays held against their chests.

Dee burst out of the cage hallway, saw us, and put both hands over her mouth.

"Callie! Is it the baby?"
