Chapter 24: The Envelope

At nine o'clock the next morning, Dario knocked on the door of my hospital room, which he had no reason to do.

He had been sleeping in the chair beside my bed.

I looked at him over Josie's head.

"You're knocking."

"I'm delivering," he said. "On the first of the month. It's official."

He held a plain white envelope in both hands.

Behind him in the hall stood Dee, the head of security, and a nurse who had stopped pretending to check the chart.

"Dario."

"Sit up. I'm doing this properly."

"I am sitting up."

"More."

I laughed and shifted Josie into the crook of my other arm.

He crossed the room, sat on the edge of the bed, and held the envelope out to me.

"Open it," he said. "Not Lowell. Not me. You."

I slid my thumb under the flap.

The first thing out was a card.

It was black plastic, with my name raised on the front in silver: *Callie Pitkin Corvino.*

I stared at it.

For nine months I had been married to the owner of a casino, and I had never once held a card with my name on it.

"It's yours," Dario said. "The account is in your name only. The bank will release a dollar only against your signature, and now you'll have a card to go with it. I've asked them to call you for anything over five thousand."

"Dario."

"There's more."

I took out the next sheet.

It was a bank statement, a real one, with a column of numbers down the right-hand side.
