Chapter 21: The Vote
Amory read all night on Sunday, and I read beside him.
That was the whole preparation.
We sat at Gran's table with the banker's box between us and two lamps, and I held the yellow pencil.
By dawn he had read two hundred and fourteen documents out loud, and I had marked thirty-eight.
On Monday morning he put the box on the boardroom glass and said, "Good morning."
Eight directors sat in the dark suits, and Todhunter sat at the head of the table again, in the chair that was Amory's.
Todhunter's lawyer stood at his shoulder.
The general counsel sat with his hands flat on a closed folder.
I took a chair against the wall, because I was not on the board and did not want to be.
"Thank you for coming," Todhunter said, pleasantly.
"Before we vote, I'd like to say how painful this is."
"Amory is a gifted man. He has been very good to this company. But a chairman who signed twenty-two foreclosure instruments without opening them is, I'm afraid, a liability."
