Chapter 13: The Infirmary Record

"No bowl," I said. "Not tonight, and not before you read something."

Lucian looked up from Lenora's white face.

"Isobel, she is dying in my arms."

"Then carry her to the infirmary, and I'll follow. Hester, bring the folder."

Two physicians took Lenora from him on the landing and ran her down the stair.

Lucian went after them without another word to the Elders.

I followed, with Hester at my side and Ronan a step behind me.

Behind us the hunters stood on the stair with their ruined crossbows and nobody told them what to do.

The infirmary had a waiting room with one bench and a lamp.

Lenora's cot was through the next door, and I could hear the physicians' low voices over her cough.

Lucian stopped in the middle of the floor and turned.

"Show me," he said.

Ronan stayed at the door with his arms folded.

Hester opened the leather folder on the bench and smoothed the first page flat.

"This is the physician's own entry for the night of the Midwinter feast," she said. "I copied it at dawn, before anyone came for the book."

She put on her spectacles and read it in a clear voice.

"Third bell. Brought from the Great Hall, Princess Isobel Ashmere, wound under the left ribs from a white bone relic. Unconscious. The wound will not close."
