Chapter 22: The Truce Hall
"Ask me at the table," I said.
Ronan blinked.
"The table?"
"I've just been handed a throne, a Court and a hundred wolves," I said. "I'd like to eat something before I answer."
A laugh ran through the hall, loud and sudden, from both walls at once.
Ronan's sister put her hand over her face.
"Gods," she said. "She's even worse than you."
They carried the long tables in from the corridors and set them end to end down the middle of the hall.
Vampire lords sat on one side and wolves on the other.
For the first quarter hour nobody spoke, and every cup was held in two hands.
Then the cooks came out with the roast.
I watched a wolf the size of a door, in a leather jerkin, take a whole pheasant off the platter and eat it in four bites.
A very old vampire lady beside him stared.
"Do you chew?" she asked him.
"Sometimes."
"Is this one of those times?"
"No, ma'am."
She took the next pheasant for herself and ate it with a knife and fork, glaring at him over the bones.
By the second course they were arguing about pepper.
By the third, she was passing him the salt.
Hester Quill sat at the middle of the table with Ronan's sister on her right.
I watched the two of them with some alarm.
Hester had opened her folder beside her plate and was asking, in her driest voice, how many wolves had died in the capital the night of the first invasion.
"Four hundred and twelve," said the sister.
"The Archive has three hundred and ninety."
