Chapter 8: Moss Comes to Lunch

I called the hospital at 8:01 on Friday morning, because Bree's text had kept me up all night.

The scheduling coordinator put me on hold and came back sounding careful.

"Ms. Merrow, a family member contacted our patient advocate on Wednesday with concerns about your decision-making."

"Which family member?"

"She identified herself as your sister."

"I don't have a sister."

"I see." Keys clicked. "Then I'll note that. The advocate has asked for a short capacity review before your procedure. It's scheduled for Tuesday at ten, with the review board."

"What does that mean?"

"It means a committee will ask whether you understand the surgery and can consent to it."

"I do. I've understood it for two years."

"Then you'll be fine on Tuesday." She hesitated. "There's something else. The administrative hold on your date was extended through Monday at noon, as a courtesy. I can't extend it again. If the deposit isn't received by then, the slot goes to the next patient on the list."

"I have five thousand nine hundred."

"The deposit is nine thousand."

"I know."

"I'm sorry, Ms. Merrow."

I hung up and put my forehead on the front desk.

"You okay?" the tech asked.

"I'm perfect."

At noon the bell rang over the door, and a tall gray dog came in wearing a blue bandanna that said GUEST.

He walked straight to Biscuit's bed behind the counter and lay down on it.

Biscuit looked at me, deeply betrayed.

"I'm so sorry," said Lorcan from the doorway. "He did that."

"He's a thief."

"He was raised by a pack of greyhounds on a track. They share everything."

"That's the saddest thing I've ever heard."
