Chapter 12: The Seat

The Fatima hall at noon on Monday was full to the walls.

Every folding chair was taken, and the old men stood along the back under the paper banners with their caps in their hands.

I came in the front door this time, in my good black dress with my hair pinned up, and four hundred heads turned.

Duarte was already on the dais.

He stood to one side of the long table in his black suit, with his hands behind his back, and he looked at me once and then at nothing.

His wrists still had the faint red marks of the rope.

I was the only one in the room who knew what they were.

At the far end of the table, among the elders, sat a heavy courteous man in a quilted vest, his hands folded over his stomach.

I had seen him before.

He ran the Fairhaven plant, and he had signed Bianca's promotion.

He nodded to me with great warmth, as to a girl he had known since she was small.

The chair rapped the table.

"The Council is met on the matter of the Alpha's debt," he said.

"The moon has twenty days to run, and the Alpha has not spoken for his mate."

"He's said he won't reject me," I said.

I said it from the floor, standing, before anyone had called on me.

A stir went through the hall.
