Chapter 18: The Back Pew

I woke in his bed at six with a gray window and the smell of coffee coming up the stair.

I was alone in the quilt, and for one clear moment I did not know where I was.

Then I knew, and I lay there looking at the rafters and let it be what it was.

I had not forgiven him.

I had slept eight hours in his bed, in a house at the end of the point, and I had not dreamed.

I found his shirt on the chair, put it on with nothing under it, and went down.

He was at the stove with his back to me, making eggs.

He had lit a fire in the grate, and the table was set for two.

He heard me on the stair and did not turn around, and the back of his neck went red.

"I didn't know how you take your coffee," he said.

"Black," I said. "Like you."

"I know that." He set the pan down. "I've known it two years, from the pier. I only forgot how to say it."

I sat at the plank table, and he put a cup in front of me.

His hand shook a little, and the coffee slopped.

I covered his hand with mine.

He stood very still, and I let it stay.

He was in his undershirt and trousers, barefoot on the scrubbed pine, and the sleeves of the undershirt showed the burn along his forearm.

I looked at the line of his back where the cotton stretched, and at the place under his ear where I had bitten him in the night.

There was a small purple mark there.

I had put it there, and nobody else would see it under his collar, and that pleased me more than I wanted to admit.

"Come here," I said.

"The eggs."

"Leave them."

He turned off the burner.

He came around the table and stood beside my chair with his hands at his sides, waiting.

I pushed his shirt off my shoulders where it hung open on me, and let him see.

His breath went out.

"Kneel," I said.

He knelt on the pine floor beside my chair.

I turned in the seat and opened my knees, and I put my hand in his hair.
