Chapter 19: Her Own Word
"I speak to a great many people," I said.
I stood two steps above him on the church stairs, which put my eyes level with his silver pin.
"So I understand." The chair turned his hat in his hands. "Walk with me, child."
"I'm not a child, and I'm not walking."
His smile did not move, but his wolf did.
It came up behind his eyes, old and gray and patient, and it looked at my mouth.
"Very well," he said. "I'll say it here, then, in God's house."
"Say it."
"The moon has a week to run." He lowered his voice. "I have seen how you look at him now. I'm an old man, but I'm not blind. You've been in his house."
"That's my business."
"It is the pack's business, since you are the Seat," the chair said. "And the pack would like to know what you intend."
"What does the pack think I intend?"
"That you will give it back to him," he said. "That you will say his name before the Council, in a pretty voice, and the Seat will be his again, and nothing will have changed in ten years but who warms his bed."
I said nothing.
"Tell me I'm wrong," the chair said gently.
"You're not asking me what I want," I said. "You're asking me which man to hand it to."
"Yes."
"I haven't decided."
"Then let me help you decide." He took a folded paper from his breast pocket and held it out. "A statement. Signed by eleven of the elders. It says that the Seat is the pack's, and the mate may place it in the hands of whom she judges fit. It names the Council's nominee. You have only to put your name beneath it at the last night of the moon."
