Chapter 13: Facts Only

I stood on the grass beside the Han River with the phone against my ear and gave her facts.

"No," I said. "He never asked me to cover for him."

"Please be specific, Ms. Renberg."

"I only ever heard the words 'work trip,'" I said. "I never vouched for anything, and I never filed anything."

Paper rustled on her end of the line.

"Do you know where he was during those five days in Denver?"

"Maui. He posted a photo from the beach, and your VP of Operations commented under it."

"Yes," she said. "That is why I'm calling at this hour."

Behind me, Dojin had gone very still.

He was watching the river.

"I can send you the group chat," I said. "It has dates on every message, and the Instagram post is public."

"Please send both to this address. Don't edit anything, and don't contact Mr. Gullikson."

"I blocked his number the minute I landed."

"Good." She paused. "Is Mr. Gullikson with you in Seoul?"

"He lands tomorrow morning at six."

The line was quiet for a second.

"Then I should tell you something," she said. "Pinecrest has a client summit in Seoul next week."

"Mr. Gullikson was assigned to staff it."

"It's the only real work trip he has been given this year."
