Chapter 17: Leave Group
Daphne picked up her suitcase and walked to the corner without looking back.
I sat on the bench and read.
Colson had written four messages in a row.
"Where is Daphne."
"Answer me."
"Daphne, I'm serious."
"Did you go to her?"
Under that, a new line appeared.
"She's with me. She's fine. Susanna is in the chat now," Daphne had typed, and then, "I'm leaving it too."
Her name went gray.
"Daphne has left the group."
The dots next to Colson's name pulsed and stopped, and pulsed again.
"Sue," Toby wrote. "Are you there? Is this you?"
"I'm here," I wrote. "I'm reading."
Colson wrote, "Susanna, I'm sorry about this morning. I was upset. Can we talk tonight, just us?"
I didn't answer him.
The chat went quiet for almost a minute.
Then a long gray box slid up from the bottom of the screen, and it was Eli's.
"This is for everyone, and it's also for my girlfriend. I'm posting it on my page, too, so she knows I'm not hiding it."
"I knew about every trip. I knew when I told you I was working weekends, babe. I was at Cape Cod, and Disneyland, and Charleston, and I was in Maui this week."
"I typed 'Looks great' under a photo of a dress while you were at home waiting for me to call."
"I've known Susanna since she was six. I owe her more than a post, and a post is all I'm giving her tonight."
"I'm not sorry because it fell apart. I was sorry at Cape Cod, when I kept my mouth shut. I just didn't do anything about it."
