Chapter 19: The Wedding Special

The judge threw out the gag order on Thursday in four minutes.

"A mother may speak about her own son," he said, and closed the file.

On Friday afternoon a courier brought me an envelope on thick white paper, and inside was a backstage pass.

*Special guest restored. Be at the stage door by 8:40. Wear the gray suit. Smile for me. L.*

I showed it to Maura at the kitchen table.

"She wants you onstage," Maura said.

"You said she would."

"I didn't think she'd be that stupid." She turned the pass over. "She thinks she's going to forgive you on live television."

"Here's the plan," I said, and I looked right at her. "You tell me first, remember."

She smiled for the first time in two days.

"Here's the plan," Maura said. "You walk out when she calls you, and I'll be in the sound booth with the drive. When you say the word *footnote* out loud, I play it."

"What if the booth is locked?"

"Freight door, loading dock, the stage manager who owes me four hundred dollars." She tapped the table. "It's open."

On Saturday night, Peggy sat in a folding chair on the loading dock with a thermos and a paper bag of sandwiches, at the freight door of Meridian Studios.

"I'll be right here," she said. "In case anyone needs feeding."

I kissed her cheek.

Maura squeezed her shoulder and vanished through the steel door with a black case in her hand.

I put on the gray suit, the one that never fit any room, and walked into the green room alone.

It was white from floor to ceiling, with white sofas and white flowers.

Brandon stood at a mirror in a black tux, straightening a bow tie.
