Chapter 17: Not His Daughter

Nobody in the Great Hall spoke a word.

Then everybody did.

The noise went up to the roof beams and came back down, and the steward banged his staff on the stone until it stopped.

Tanguy was the only one who hadn't moved.

He stood beside the old midwife with his hand on her shoulder.

"Father," he said, "I'm sorry you had to say it here."

"You aren't," the king said.

The chancellor stood up at the end of the high table.

He was a narrow man in black who had signed every judgment in the realm for twenty years.

I had copied his signature more times than he had written it.

"Majesty," he said. "The law is plain, and the court should hear it plainly."

"The last Lord of Penhal was hanged as a traitor," he said. "His name is on the traitors' list."

"A traitor's child holds no land and can make no wager before the king."

"So the wager is void," he said. "The prince owes nothing and kneels to no one."

Tanguy brushed the dust off the knee of his hose where it had touched the floor yesterday.
