"Nine hundred crowns," I said. "I haven't got nine crowns."

"I know what you've got," Katell said. "I've seen your reeve's books. She shows them to anyone who asks nicely."

"I don't ask nicely," Enora said from behind me.

"She doesn't," Katell agreed. "I asked anyway."

"What do you want?"

"Not here," Katell said. "Tomorrow, at the landing. I'm bringing the masters."

Twelve guild masters came up the river in the morning and stood on the black stones of the landing among the ash.

The white-bearded master who'd dropped his green coat at the assize was at the front.

He looked at the ruins of the market and then at me.

"Turnips," he said. "I said turnips. I never said you'd burn the turnips."

"The turnips were very brave," I said.

Katell stood in the middle of the masters with her arms folded.

"Here's my price," she said, loud enough for the masters and the boatmen and Erwan's men on the path.

"A seat for the river guild at Penhal's table," she said. "Not below the salt. At it."
