Chapter 24: The Empty Chair

The council hall in Kerys was a long room with a painted ceiling and one table down the middle of it.

There were ten chairs at the table.

The king's chair stood at the head, carved with the crown, and Tanguy was sitting in it.

The king lay three floors above us, and the physicians said he wouldn't come down again.

Eight lords of the council sat along the two sides.

The old Lady of the North was one of them, with her sticks against the table.

The steward had refused her hounds.

The Lord of the West March was another, across from her, with his falcon left outside and a sour face.

I knew most of the others by their accounts.

The chancellor in black.

The treasurer, who had paid Penhal's debt in the spring and then unpaid it.

The bishop of Kerys, who owed the crown for a roof.

The Lord of the Sea Gate, who kept the harbor and paid his dues a week early every quarter.

The tenth chair stood at the foot of the table, facing the king's.
