Chapter 27: The King

The king's bedchamber was hot and dark, with the curtains drawn and a fire built up.

He lay in a bed big enough for six men, propped on pillows, and he looked like something left in it by mistake.

His hands lay on the cover.

His rings had been taken off because they slid.

The physicians went out when I came in.

The door shut behind them.

"Sit," the king said.

There was a chair by the bed.

I didn't sit in it.

"I've stood at the end of your lowest table for ten years," I said. "I can stand at the end of your bed."

Something moved at the corner of his mouth.

"You were always the one who answered," he said. "Tanguy laughs. The boy cries. You answered."

"You sent for me, Majesty."

"I did," he said. "I'm told the River Lord will speak to the council tomorrow."

"News travels fast in a sickroom."

"Everything comes to a sickroom," he said. "Nobody's afraid of it anymore."

He breathed for a while.

It took him some effort.

"You asked me her name," he said. "In the hall, in the spring."
