My Brother Called From the Ocean Floor, So I Hung Up novel · Chapter 8 of 24

Chapter 8: The Interview

That night I couldn't sit in my apartment, so I walked to the bar on the corner of my street.

It's a small place with six tables and one television bolted above the register.

I took the stool at the end and ordered a ginger ale.

The bartender nodded and didn't look at my face for long.

At nine o'clock the television switched to a network special.

KIT RASK: THE FIRST INTERVIEW.

I'd known it was coming. My father's people had been advertising it since noon.

I watched the room change.

Four men at the bar turned to the screen. A couple in the back booth stopped talking. Someone turned the volume up.

My brother sat in a studio armchair with a blanket over his knees.

The interviewer was a warm woman in a gray dress, with a face built for sympathy.

"Kit, thank you for being here."

"Thank you for having me."

"Take us to the moment you realized you were in danger."

Kit looked down at his hands.

The bandage was fresh. Somebody had wrapped it again for the cameras.

"The alarm went," he said. "The water started coming in through the hatch seal. I called the Institute, and I asked for my brother."

"Why him?"

"Because he's the best there is." Kit's voice broke. "He's my big brother. He taught me how to dive."

A man at the bar said something low.

"And what did he say?" the interviewer asked.

"Nothing. He hung up."

"Did you ever find out why?"

"I think," Kit said, and he took a long time, "I think he's always resented me. Dad paid attention to me, and Emmett was the one who held the family up. He never got to be the star."
