Chapter 19: What She Wanted

Sasha's POV

I came out of the dark in Kirk's flannel shirt and found my sister sitting at his kitchen table.

She had taken off her pale coat and folded it over the chair.

She looked ordinary. She looked tired, and twenty-seven.

"I'll stand," Kirk said quietly, and leaned against the counter with his arms crossed.

"Sit, please," Janie said. "I'm not going to throw anything."

I sat across from her.

"How did you know I was here?"

"Dylan's calendar. He still shares it with me." Her mouth twitched. "He forgot to turn it off. He's not very good at hating people."

"What do you want, Janie?"

"To say something without anyone watching."

She put her hands flat on the table.

"You know the facts. I told them to you upstairs. I never told you what I did with them."

I didn't say anything.

"When she said his name in that hospital in Dayton, I thought, he'll come. I thought that for two months."

Her voice stayed even.

"I called his office eight times. His assistant said he was in meetings."

"Eight."

"And then she died. And he came, to the funeral, in a gray suit, and stood at the back with his hands in his pockets."

"Janie..."

"He didn't say a word to me. Not one. He looked at me for exactly as long as it took to find the door."

She stopped there, and I saw her swallow.
