Chapter 4: My Project, Her Name
Friday's Beacon review was held in the old hotel ballroom, with plastic sheeting still over the windows.
Kirk's side of the table held his lender and three of his investors.
Ours held Dad, Dylan, Janie and me, with my left hand wrapped in white tape.
Dylan had put me at the far end, next to the water pitcher.
"Sasha will answer technical questions," he told the lender. "Janie will present."
Janie stood up with a clicker.
She wore the blazer from Dylan's video, and her hands were shaking a little, in a way that made you want to help.
"I want to start by saying I'm just the messenger," she said. "This building is extraordinary. I'm lucky to carry it."
Everyone smiled at her.
The first slide came up on the wall.
It was my north stair, the curved oak one that wraps up through all nine floors.
I knew every line of it. I had drawn it at my kitchen table in March, on the back of a takeout menu, and then built it forty times in the model until it was right.
Under the drawing, in a clean gray font, the slide said: Concept: P. Lang.
The second slide was my lobby ceiling.
Concept: P. Lang.
The third was the brass-door elevation I had fought Kirk over for a month.
Concept: P. Lang.
I put my pen down.
"Excuse me," I said. "Janie, what does that say on the slide?"
"Oh." She turned and looked at it. "Oh, no. That's Dylan's template, it puts the presenter's name on everything. I'll fix it right now."
