Thalia's POV

Laz stopped the truck in the middle of the lane and got out before the engine had finished shuddering.

I got out the other side with my shirt buttoned wrong.

Four men stood at the black gate in their good shoes, and none of them looked at me.

They looked at the porch.

Despina rocked once in her chair.

The shotgun lay across her knees, long and old, the stock worn pale where somebody's hand had held it for forty years.

"Good morning," she said, to the whole lane.

"You are standing in front of my gate."

One of the men, the heavy one with the gold pinky ring, took his hand out of his pocket.

"Kyria Despina," he said.

"We're only here to see the girl home."

"She is home," Despina said.

"Mr. Stavrakis would like a word with her."

"Which one?" said Despina.

There was a pause.

Laz had walked around the front of the truck.

He stopped beside me, not touching me, so near that I could feel the heat of his arm.

"My uncle sent you to my grandmother's house at seven in the morning," he said.

His voice was perfectly even.

"With four men and two cars."

"A courtesy, Lazaros."

"Then I'll return it.

"Tell him the next time, my grandmother won't ask you to leave."

The heavy man smiled thinly.
