Chapter 18: Nikos
We brought my brother in at first light, in a borrowed skiff on a towline behind the Eleni S.
I stood at the stern rail with Laz's jacket over my shoulders and watched the little boat bob in the wake.
A man sat in it with his knees drawn up and a duffel bag between his feet.
I had not seen him in almost four months.
He was thinner than I remembered, brown as a fish-house rope, with a black beard that did not suit him and his curls grown out over his ears.
He looked up and saw me and lifted a hand.
I did not lift mine.
Laz brought the Eleni S. up to the sponge dock at the foot of Dodecanese Boulevard just as the sun cleared the roofs.
The boats lay still in their rows.
A gull walked along a piling.
Nobody else was there yet, and I thought, for a moment, that we had gotten in clean.
Nikos came up the ladder first.
He stood on the boards with the duffel on his shoulder and looked at me.
"Thalia," he said.
I crossed the dock and slapped him.
