Chapter 26: The Bull

On Monday the sale barn in town was full by nine.

Jesse's grandfather had raised the Tillman bull's bloodline for forty years, and the ring was packed with men who had come to see it go.

I sat in the second row with Dean on my left and the widow on my right.

Daisy sat on my lap with a paper cup of lemonade.

Dean had spent the morning at the sheriff's office signing his complaint against Lottie.

He had spent the hour after that in a lawyer's front room, with the retired judge from the Cattlemen's dinner at his elbow.

"She'll have a man from Billings by Wednesday," the judge had said. "We file for paternity today and ask for the earliest hearing the court has. Friday at nine."

"What does it cost?" Dean had asked.

The judge named a number.

Dean had gone quiet, because he had come home with eleven hundred dollars and a truck.

Now Jesse walked the bull into the ring himself.

He held a rope in one hand and his hat in the other.

The auctioneer began to chant, and Jesse raised his hat and stopped him.

"Before you start," he said. "I want everybody here to hear why I'm selling."

The barn went quiet.

"My wife's brother is going to court Friday for his little girl. I'm paying his lawyer."

He didn't look at us.

"And I took five years of money out of my mother's savings and gave it to someone who didn't earn it. I'm putting every dollar of that back."
