Chapter 19: Arrest
The detective stood on the landing with an officer behind him, and neither of them looked sleepy.
"Mr. Larkin," the detective said. "I'm sorry about the hour. May we come in?"
Jesse held the door while Nate stepped back.
"The warrant was signed at eleven," the detective said. "Aggravated assault with a drug, and conspiracy. Mr. Dowling is wanted on both."
"Where is he?" Nate asked.
"We don't know. We lost him at the natatorium this afternoon." The detective turned to Jesse. "Your roommate told me he sent you a message."
Jesse took out his phone and held it up.
The detective read it twice, and a muscle moved in his cheek.
"Bring him," he said. "Does he mean Mr. Brandvold?"
"I think so."
"The ceremony is at eleven tomorrow. He expects you both to be there."
"He wants to put on a show," Nate said.
"He wants an audience," the detective said.
He handed the phone back.
"We'll give him one, with four officers in plain clothes."
"I'd like you to come and behave as if nothing has changed."
