Chapter 10: Sunday Supper
Odette invited us both to Sunday supper, and she did it in front of the whole ice house.
"Seven o'clock," she told Lucius, handing him a bag of crushed ice. "Bring the girl."
"The girl has a name," I said.
"Bring the girl who has a name."
She never looked at either of us.
She lives in a yellow shotgun house three streets back from the bayou, with a screened porch and a statue of Saint Joseph in the garden that she says has never failed her.
By then Lucius had spent seven nights in my bed on Twenty-third Street, and my aunt had pretended not to count.
We walked in separately.
I did it for him.
He came ten minutes after me, in a clean shirt, carrying a pie from the grocery, and set it on the counter like evidence.
"Sit," Odette said.
The table was set for three.
There was red beans and rice, smothered pork chops, a skillet of cornbread, and a pitcher of tea sweating on the cloth.
Lucius took the seat on my left.
Odette sat at the head with her back to the window, and picked up her fork, and looked at the two of us for a long moment.
"So," she said. "Let's all stop being stupid."
