Chapter 11: Off the Record
The clerk in the records room brought me the file in a brown folder with a rubber band around it, and looked sorry about how thin it was.
"That's everything we have, Mona."
"Thank you."
I sat at the long table and slid the band off.
Three sheets, stapled.
A deputy's narrative, typed, with a date eleven years ago in the corner.
"Decedent was en route to check a moored vessel at the Devereaux dock during the storm. Vehicle struck the guardrail on the Galveston causeway and entered the bay. A second motorist, a friend of the decedent, recovered him from the water. Death was pronounced at the scene."
There was a form with my father's name and his date of birth and the make of his truck.
There was a photograph, black and white, of a rail.
At the bottom of the third sheet, in small type, it said "Page 3 of 5."
I turned the sheet over.
Nothing.
I turned back through the folder, looking for four and five.
There was only the inside of the folder.
