Chapter 16: Boards
The dock boarded up in a day and a half, and I carried plywood for most of it.
The hands came in at dawn without being asked, six men who worked the Odette D. and the two other boats that tied up with us.
They did not say one word about me and the Captain.
They looked at the two of us once, and nodded, and went to work.
The sky went low and purple.
By Thursday noon the Gulf was swelling up against the Seawall in long grey lines.
We screwed half-inch plywood over the ice house windows.
We doubled the lines on the Odette D., four to the pilings fore and aft, with Lucius going down the dock on his knees checking every knot.
Odette carried the ledgers up to the second floor of her yellow house, one armload at a time, and refused help.
At two o'clock Lucius went into the office and came out with a brown envelope.
He walked down the dock to where my aunt and I were hauling sandbags and stopped in front of us.
"Odette," he said. "Monalisa."
"What's that?" Odette said.
"The deed."
My aunt put down her bag.
"The year after Rémy," Lucius said, "the bank came for the note. You had thirty days, Odette. I paid it. I put the deed in my name so they'd stop calling you."
"I know what you did."
"I never changed it back."
"I know that too," Odette said.
"It isn't mine." He held the envelope out to me, not to her. "It's Rémy's, and yours. The lawyer on Market Street has the transfer drawn. I put both your names on it this week. You sign, and the dock is yours, all of it, free and clear. I'll lease my berth like any captain."
