Chapter 19: The Night Before

Lucius's POV

The night before the supper I filled the old tub and sat in it with the lights off, because I could not think of anywhere else to put myself.

It's a cast iron claw-foot I took out of a house on Broadway the year it was torn down.

The water was hot and the window was open.

I had been in it half an hour when I heard the screen door.

I knew the step.

Five weeks, and I knew her step on my porch from any other.

"Lucius?"

"Back here."

She came down the hall and stopped in the bathroom door with a bag of groceries on her hip.

She wore a loose green dress, and her curls were down, and she set the bag on the floor and looked at me.

"You're sitting in the dark."

"I am."

"Why?" she asked.

"I'm afraid of tomorrow."

She did not say it would be fine.

I loved her for that, among a lot of things.

She crossed the tile, knelt by the tub, and put her hand in the water.

"Tell me."

I put my head back against the rim.

"Sixty people," I said. "More. Every family on the dock. Marchetti and his father and half the buyers on the Gulf. You'll play the tape. You'll tell them what he did, and I'll stand beside you, because I said I would."

"And?"

"And somebody will ask what he knew. And I'll have to say."
