Chapter 7: Say Yes
He did as he'd said.
He stopped, and he pulled out of me slowly, and my body complained with a wet little sound that made us both go red.
He sat back on his heels on the bunk with his hands on his thighs.
His chest was heaving.
"I told you," he said.
"You did."
"I meant it."
"I know you did." I sat up with the blanket in my fists. "That's why I'm asking. What is it, Lucius? What does it do to you?"
"It doesn't do anything."
"Your whole body locked."
He looked at me.
He was naked and flushed and still hard, with the lamp turning the grey in his beard to gold.
He looked more tired than I'd ever seen him.
"I'm not that," he said. "I'm not what that word says."
"I know you're not my father."
"I was his friend."
"I know what you were," I said.
"Then you know I can't."
"I know you can't say no to the rest of it," I said. "You said no on the dock. You said no to the truck. You said no to the causeway. You said once, and then you said Thursday."
His mouth moved.
"I'm asking you something different," I said. "I'm asking whether you want it. Not whether you ought to."
He didn't answer.
The boat creaked on its lines.
I slid off the bunk and stood up, bare, with my curls over my shoulders, and I walked past him to the ladder.
"Where are you going?"
"Up."
"Monalisa," he said.
I climbed the ladder to the wheelhouse.
It was dark up there, with the whole bayou glittering through the glass and the big brass wheel in front of me.
