Chapter 15: Lobby
Caden got behind me before I told him to.
I felt his gloved hands grab the back of my sweatshirt.
Tasha stopped six feet away with her phone held out.
"Get away from my son."
"He's fine," I said. "He's waiting for his grandmother."
"You lured him here!" She turned the phone toward the lobby. "Everybody, this woman lured my sick child onto a bus! She went on TV and told him where to find her!"
People stopped.
A volunteer in a red vest at the information desk half stood up.
A man holding a bunch of grocery-store tulips stopped at the elevators.
A mother with a toddler on her hip came out of the gift shop and stayed there.
Phones came up all over the lobby, one after another.
Brad caught up to her, out of breath.
"Heidi, what the hell is this? You can't take somebody's kid."
"He took the number ten bus with his soccer money," I said. "To bring Clara this."
I held up the card.
SORRY I BLEW OUT YOUR CANDLES. YOU CAN BLOW OUT ALL OF MINE.
Brad read it.
Something moved in his face and then went still.
"Caden, come here," Tasha said. "Right now."
He didn't move.
"Baby. You're tired. You're confused. You need your medicine."
"I don't have medicine," Caden said into my back.
Tasha laughed for the phones.
"See? She's been in his head. One breakfast and she's got him saying things."
A guard in a blue uniform was coming across the marble from the security desk.
He wasn't hurrying, but he was looking right at Tasha.
He had a sheet of paper in his hand with her face printed on it.
"Ma'am," he said. "I need you to step back from the boy."
"He's my son!"
"Step back, please."
"You can't tell me to step back from my own son!" She swung toward Brad. "Tell them who I am. Tell them he's sick."
