Chapter 20: Grand Reopening
"What did they say?" I asked.
"That I brought the firm into a scandal." Brad laughed, and it wasn't a laugh. "Somebody called the front desk forty times. Somebody sent a dead fish."
"Did you sell the watch?"
He was quiet.
"Tuesday," he said. "Eleven thousand."
"That's a start."
"It's not even a quarter."
"I know," I said. "That's why it's a start. See you June ninth."
I hung up.
I didn't feel sorry for him.
I felt something smaller and tireder than that, and then I went downstairs and creamed four pounds of butter.
Heidi's Crown Cakes reopened on Saturday, May 30, at eight in the morning.
I'd been up since three.
The display case held lemon, chocolate, strawberry, coconut, and a carrot cake for the landlord with his name on it in green.
Every cake had a pink paper crown on top.
I'd cut two hundred of them at the kitchen table upstairs, and Clara had inspected every one.
At seven-thirty, my mother opened the blinds and said, "Oh, Heidi."
There was a line.
It went from my door past the laundromat, past the tire shop, all the way to the corner of Parsons Avenue.
People in sweatshirts with coffee. Old men in ball caps. A woman with twins in a double stroller.
Somebody had brought a folding chair.
"Who are they?" I said.
"Your customers," my mother said. "Go put your apron on."
At the back of the shop sat the sanded farmhouse table with a jar of pink cranes in the middle.
Clara's sign was taped to the wall above it in a frame Matt had bought at the dollar store.
RESERVED FOR 7TH FLOOR. NO REGULAR PEOPLE. EXCEPT MATT.
The mom across the hall was already sitting there with two coffees.
She was going home to Lexington on Monday.
