Chapter 25: Last Wish
I called my lawyer from the kitchen with the lawsuit still in my hand.
She read it while I listened to her breathe.
"A million dollars," she said. "That's cute."
"Cute?"
"It's a gag, Heidi. It's meant to shut you up before Saturday." I heard her cough drop click against her teeth. "Is anything you've said about her untrue?"
"No."
"Then truth is a defense, and she just handed us discovery on her own page." She sounded almost happy. "Go to the party. Wear something nice."
On Saturday night I wore the green dress.
I didn't own another nice one, and Clara said the green one had "good luck in it now."
Matt came up the three concrete steps at six in his navy suit, with a pink cardstock crown in a sandwich bag.
"For later," he said. "In case anyone needs one."
Clara wore her best crown, her fox top under a pink cardigan, and a mask with cartoon cats on it.
"Ten minutes," I said in the car.
"I know."
"By the door. No hugging."
"I know, Mom. You said it nine times."
The hotel ballroom downtown had chandeliers.
Forty round tables. White cloths. A silver balloon arch over the stage.
On the stage, a screen, showing a single gold word: HOPE.
At the entrance there was an easel with a poster-sized photo of a bald child in a hospital bed, face turned to the window.
I knew the blanket.
It was the one my mother brought on a Saturday in March.
The mom across the hall stood beside me and looked at it.
She'd driven three hours from Lexington in a borrowed black dress, and her hand found mine.
"Breathe," she said. "Then walk."
