My Daughter Is Dying, and My Husband Is Saving His Lover's Son novel · Chapter 6 of 32
Chapter 6: Fever Night
The room filled up fast.
Two more nurses. A resident with his hair still wet from a shower.
Somebody drew blood from Clara's port into four tubes with different colored caps.
Somebody hung a bag of antibiotics before the cultures had even left the room.
"Her counts are zero," Matt said to me, very calm. "She's got no white cells yet. Your cells haven't moved in. Any germ that gets into her right now has nobody to fight it."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we treat it like sepsis until it proves it isn't."
"Is it sepsis?"
"We'll know in a day or two."
"A day or two?"
"I know."
Clara started to shake.
It began in her jaw. Her teeth clicked together.
Then her whole body was shaking under the blanket, hard.
"Mommy, I'm cold. I'm so cold."
"I know, baby."
"Rigors," Matt said. "Her body's fighting. It looks worse than it is."
"It looks like she's dying."
"It looks worse than it is," he said again, and held my eyes until I nodded.
I climbed into the bed with her.
Nobody stopped me.
I wrapped around her back and held her arms against her chest and pressed my cheek to the back of her hot bald head.
Her shaking went into me until we were both shaking.
I called Brad at 7:02.
It rang five times and went to voicemail.
"Clara has a fever of a hundred and four. They think it's sepsis. Come."
I called him at 7:30.
At 8:15.
At 9.
I texted him the words "blood infection" and "ICU if it gets worse."
He read it. The little word "Read" sat under my message like a closed door.
