Chapter 27: Their Real Names

"I'll come in tomorrow," I told the chief clerk. "Seven-thirty. I'll give you my answer in person."

I hung up.

Malphas was still leaning over me with one hand flat on the brick by my head.

"Where were we?" I said.

The stairwell door opened against my back.

I nearly fell down the stairs. Malphas caught me by the coat.

The boy from 4D stuck his head out into the snow.

"Opal says you'll catch your deaths," he said. "Also the soup's getting cold."

He looked at us. He looked at Malphas's hand on the brick.

"Gross," he said, and went back down.

The party in the lobby went on until two in the morning.

I fell asleep on the stairs under three coats and two hounds, with my head on Malphas's knee, and he let me.

At seven-thirty, I walked into the housing court through the staff door on Fourth Street.

The hallway was full. It always is at seven-thirty.

The same clerks stopped with the same coffees to watch, the way they had in September.

Malphas waited on the steps outside, inside a hundred feet out of habit.

The chief clerk was standing in the middle of the hall with my old badge in one hand and an envelope in the other.

"Ms. Kimball," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"You said you'd like me back."

"I would." He held out the envelope. "Your back pay. Every week since September. And a promotion, if you want it. Supervisor of the filing windows."
