Chapter 28: Sentencing

Spring was a long way off in February.

On the eighteenth, I put on my good navy cardigan and a gray wool skirt and went to watch Royce Greaves be sentenced.

He'd pleaded guilty in January.

Bribery of a city official. Two hundred and twelve counts of fraud, one for every lease with a made-up debt on it.

His lawyers had quit by then. Greaves Holdings was in bankruptcy, and lawyers who quit a bankrupt client don't come back.

The criminal courthouse was downtown, six blocks from his glass tower.

Somebody had already taken his name off the top of the tower. You could still see the clean letters on the dirty glass where it had been.

Courtroom nine held a hundred and forty people.

By nine in the morning, there were a hundred and forty Greaves tenants in it, and more in the hall.

They'd come with their years back.

The grandmother from the Eastside had dark hair again, pinned up under a church hat.

The woman from Lacey's window sat in the third row with her mother. She looked thirty, which was what she was.

The old man who used to walk with a cane had walked up the courthouse steps two at a time to show me.

The young mother from courtroom two sat on the aisle with a folder in her lap.

Lacey sat on one side of me. Malphas sat on the other, in his coat with the crooked button.
