Chapter 32: Plain Ink
I knew that trash bag.
I'd carried one just like it out of my last foster home on my eighteenth birthday.
"I'm Dorrie," I said.
The girl looked at my bare feet, and the rice, and the shirt that came down to my knees.
"Did I wreck something?"
"I got married today," I said. "You didn't wreck it. You're the first person to knock."
Behind me, Malphas stood at the foot of the stairs in his trousers and nothing else.
The three hounds sat down in a row in their bow ties.
The girl stared at them.
"Are those dogs?"
"Sort of," I said. "They're good boys."
Biscuit wagged his whole back half.
She almost smiled.
"Who changed your locks?"
"The man who owns the rooming house. I was two weeks behind. He said thirty days was too many." She hitched the bag up. "I can pay something. Not much."
"Then you'll pay whatever you can," I said. "Come in."
She didn't move.
"What's the catch?"
Malphas spoke for the first time.
"There's no catch," he said. "There's a door that locks from the inside."
She looked up at him for a long time.
Then she stepped over the threshold and the green door shut behind her.
I put her in the small bedroom of 5C that night.
It had a bed nobody had slept in since October, and a dresser with nothing in it.
