Chapter 6: Two Million

"Don't open it," Malphas said.

"He knows my name. He knows about the wedding. I want to know what else he knows."

"He's a man. He can come into the lobby. He can't come further."

"Then let's meet him in the lobby."

We went down the stairs together, with the hounds ahead of us.

Doors opened on every floor as we passed.

The building had felt the shove too.

By the time I reached the bottom, half the Larkspur was on the stairs in bathrobes.

Opal stood in the door of 2B with a rolling pin.

Malphas opened the green door.

Royce Greaves stepped in.

Up close, his teeth were very white and his tan was very even.

He wore a gold signet ring on his little finger.

He held out the roses to me.

"For the bride."

I didn't take them.

He set them on top of the brass mailboxes, still smiling.

"You don't know me," he said. "But I know you, Dorrie. Can I call you Dorrie?"

"No."

"Ms. Kimball, then." He glanced at Malphas. "And this must be the husband. You've kept her very well. Two days, and she's still breathing."

Malphas said nothing at all.

The big one's lips peeled back from his teeth.

Royce looked at the hound and didn't flinch.

That scared me more than anything else he did.

"I'll be quick," he said. "I'm a businessman. I'm here with an offer."

He pulled an envelope from his jacket.

"At sunrise on the sixteenth day, your bond seals. If it seals, you own half of this hearth. Half this building."

"How do you know that?"

"I read contracts too, sweetheart."

He held out the envelope.

"Two million dollars," he said. "For your half. You sign it over to me on the morning of the eighteenth, and you walk out of here a rich woman."
