My Don Faked His Death to Test Me, So I Died Haunting Him novel · Chapter 8 of 24

Chapter 8: Blanks Outside, Live Rounds Inside

After the funeral, Alessio had Gemma let out of the pantry and brought to his study.

I followed them in and stood beside the chair nobody was sitting in.

Tullio stood at the window with his back to the room. My brothers stood on either side of the door.

Gemma had not slept in three days, and her white coat was gray at the cuffs.

"You said blanks," Alessio said. "Every one of us heard you say blanks."

"I did say blanks. I told my maid to buy blanks. I only wanted the women frightened."

"Bring the maid."

One of my brothers went out and came back with her.

She walked into the study with her hands folded in front of her and stopped on the carpet.

She was the one who had laid the lilies on Mina's coffin that morning.

Alessio looked at her for the first time as a person.

"You," he said. "What do you know about the guns?"

"Everything, Don Duranti."

Gemma turned in her chair.

"Ines?" she said.

So that was her name. I had lived a year in the same house and never learned it.

"Tell it from the start," Alessio said.

"Miss Colombo told me to find a way to make the test look real," Ines said. "She told me to put men around the estate and have them shout threats at the women."
