Chapter 20: Angelina's Night

Angelina made a sound I'd never heard from her.

It wasn't crying.

It was smaller than that, like something stepped on.

The orange life jacket slid out of her hands onto the grass.

Nobody under the tents moved.

The Bay Ridge boss's wife had her hand over her mouth.

"Cosimo," Angelina said again. "Please."

He'd already turned away from her.

He was smiling sadly at the wives, a man bearing his cross.

I pulled my arms out of the Varrone men's hands.

They let go.

I think they were as shocked as anyone.

"Cosimo," I said.

He looked at me.

"You know where you were that morning." I said it clearly, for the tents. "Five hundred people watched you open that photograph at the altar. Now you're telling their wives you don't know whose baby it is?"

"A photograph of a man asleep," he said, "proves a man was tired."

"It proves where."

The old man's daughter laughed at the back, one hard note.

Cosimo's face didn't change.

But he went back into the house without another word, and his mother followed him.

My sister stood alone on the lawn in her pink dress.

I picked up the life jacket and put it back in her arms.

Then the Varrone men walked me to the gate, and I let them.

That night the rain came in off the ocean.

I ran the small launch anyway.

Two late runs to Bayonne, one to the Brooklyn piers, the Sarno men on deck in yellow slickers and the deckhand at the bow light.

We brought her back into St. George at one in the morning, rain coming sideways across the harbor.

The deckhand jumped to the pier with the bow line.

Then he stopped.

"Captain," he called back. "Somebody's on the boat."

I came out of the wheelhouse.

There was a shape in the stern, on the wet bench under the canopy, where it was hardly any drier.
