Chapter 7: Envelope Two
The Bay Ridge boss didn't touch it at first.
He looked at the wax.
Then he looked across the floor at Cosimo, who had gone very still with his glass in the air.
"Your seal," the old man said to him, loud enough for the first three tables.
"My mother's stationery," Cosimo said. "Marcella seems to have kept it. She has a taste for theater."
A few people laughed.
The Bay Ridge boss handed the sleeping baby to his wife.
He took a pocketknife out of his vest and slit the envelope along the top.
The photograph slid out onto the white tablecloth.
His face didn't change.
His wife's did.
Behind him, both his sons leaned in to look.
The younger one said a word you don't say at a christening.
"That's him," the older son said. "That's the fed. He sat in the front row at my brother's sentencing. He smiled the whole time."
The room went quiet in a ring, from the head table out.
I heard the band's drummer set his sticks down.
The Bay Ridge boss turned the photograph over.
On the back, in my handwriting, I'd written the date and nothing else.
He read it.
"October," he said.
"Last October," I said. "The second Tuesday. Two in the morning. From my pier at St. George to the Bay Ridge flats."
Cosimo set his glass down.
He came across the dance floor slowly, smiling, hands open.
"My wife's sister has had a hard week," he told the room. He shook his head sadly at me. "Marcella, that picture could be any two men on any boat. Faces are easy to fake now. A boy with a laptop can do it."
"It's my boat," I said. "It's my stern light. That's the scratch on my rail from when the Staten Island ferry kissed us in a fog four years ago."
I didn't look away from him.
"You booked that run yourself. You called my cell at eleven that night. You paid cash."
