Chapter 8: The Roof

Ettore was out of the car before it stopped rolling.

He left the door open and the engine running.

He didn't run.

He walked across the lot toward Cosimo at the same easy pace he'd crossed the cathedral.

Cosimo took one step back into the dark before he could stop himself.

"Cosimo," Ettore said. "You're standing very close to my wife."

"We were talking about you."

"I heard my name." Ettore stopped beside me, between us. "If you want to talk about me, come to Red Hook. I'm home every night. I'll put the coffee on."

Cosimo looked at him.

Then at me.

"Ask him," he said again, and got back into his car.

It pulled out under the trees with its lights off.

Ettore watched it all the way to the avenue.

Then he took the shoes out of my hand and opened my door.

Neither of us said anything on the Gowanus.

At the warehouse, I didn't go to my room.

I went up the iron stairs to the roof in my green silk and bare feet, and I heard him follow.

The pigeons were asleep in the coop, a soft murmur in the dark.

Across the water, the Statue had her torch lit.

I turned around.

"Where were you at midnight?" I said. "The night my father died."

"I told you. On the pier."

"You told the cathedral. You told me you held him. You never told me why you were there." I could hear my voice going up and couldn't stop it.

"Cosimo has a witness who saw your car on my pier before the shots."

"Then his witness is lying."

"Then tell me the truth!"

The pigeons stirred.

Ettore stood by the coop with his hands at his sides.

"Your father called me," he said. "On a Wednesday. The first time a Cardone had called a Sarno in twenty years."

I stopped breathing.

"He said the war between our families was older than both of us and dumber than both of us. He said he wanted to end it. He wanted Sarno boats on Cardone piers and the Varrones kept off them." He looked at the Statue.

"He asked me to meet him alone, at midnight, at the end of his pier, Thursday."

"And you went."

"I went." His voice dropped. "I was late. There was an accident on the bridge. Eight minutes."
