Chapter 14: The Dark Floor
It took four tries to cut the rope, because Bai Jin's hand would not hold the box cutter still.
He had known the moment he saw the man in the grey jacket.
He had known it again when the bolt went into Gong Ting's shoulder.
Now he stood at the back wall of the Floor in the dark.
His father's key was in the lock of the control box, and his heart was going so hard it hurt.
The box was a steel cabinet with a row of switches under a dusty glass.
Lights, pumps, the east door, the south door.
The ramp.
His hand went to the last one and stopped.
Gong Ting had given the order to stay on his arm, and Bai Jin had said I know.
He was breaking his word to the only man who had ever made him feel safe.
He was doing it because the plan was good, and it needed one person, and the one person had to be him.
He threw the main breaker.
The Floor went black.
Every lamp, every strip, every exit sign died at once, and in the dark the shouting from the south stairs rose and changed.
Bai Jin threw a second switch.
A single bar of white light came on at the far end of the hall.
