Chapter 16: The Buyer

I read the Notice of Sale three times on the step.

Harlan Hagedorn, trustee, until Matilda Hagedorn reaches the age of thirty.

That was the sentence my father had been saying to me since I was twenty-four.

"Trustee until thirty," the foreman said. "He's got the paper."

"He's got his copy."

I went up to the room and knelt in front of my mother's toolbox.

The bottom drawer had stuck since I was a kid.

She had told me once that it opened if you pressed the brass pin under the lip and swore at it.

I pressed the pin and swore.

Inside was a plain envelope with my name on it in her crooked hand.

Under it lay a folded legal paper with a county stamp.

I read the second page standing up, with my back against the cold window.

Then I read it again, out loud, to the empty room.

"Until she marries, or reaches thirty, whichever comes first."

I put my forehead against the glass and started to laugh.

On Thursday at ten a black SUV and a gray sedan came up the gravel road side by side.
