Chapter 13: The Convict Billionaire

Caleb did not run again.

He walked to the bed slowly and stopped an arm's length from Desmond.

"Take your thumb off the button," he said.

"Why? It only calls a nurse."

"Then you won't mind if I press it."

He reached across, closed his hand over Desmond's, and pushed down hard.

A bell rang at the nurses' desk, and quick footsteps came down the corridor.

Desmond's smile slipped for the first time that night.

He pulled his hand free and tucked it into his coat.

The night nurse appeared in the doorway, out of breath.

"Is something wrong?"

"This man is not family and not a friend," Caleb said.

"Call security, and call Mr. Gage."

The nurse looked at the lilies, then at Desmond, and she picked up the wall phone without another word.

"Overreacting," Desmond said lightly. "I'll go. I only wanted to see her."

He walked to the door and stopped beside Caleb.

"Three years inside, and you still think you're the one who decides things," he said.

"Get out."

"Do you know whose car it was, Caleb?"

Caleb said nothing.

"A gray sedan, registered in your name, at your old address. Chantal borrowed it that night because hers was at the shop."

"I know it was my car."

"Then you know how it will look." Desmond leaned in until their shoulders touched.

"By morning, every screen in this country will have it."

"Have what?"

"The part of the video that matters."

The elevator opened at the end of the corridor.

Four of Bernard's guards stepped out, and they walked toward the room together.
