Chapter 18: Her Own Face

"Three years ago on Route 9, a man was struck in a crosswalk and left to lie in the road," Desmond said.

His voice was smooth and sad, and the ballroom listened.

"The man who did it served his sentence. Tonight he has come to my engagement as a guest, and he sits at table one, a billionaire."

Heads turned toward Caleb.

He did not look away from the stage.

"I loved Chantal through every day of that trial," Desmond went on.

"But I cannot toast my wife and keep silent about what I know. The man you see at table one never earned the money."

"Desmond," Chantal said.

"Sit, darling. This is hard for all of us."

"Desmond, give me the microphone."

He laughed gently and turned to the room.

"She's tired. She hasn't slept."

Chantal stood up.

Her chair scraped back loud in the silence.

She reached out, took the microphone stand in both hands, and pulled it toward her.

Desmond's fingers closed on her wrist.

"Let go," she said very quietly.

He stared at her.

She looked at his hand, and she looked at the guard by the wall, and he let her go.

She faced the ballroom.

Two hundred people sat in gold chairs with their phones in their laps.

"My name is Chantal Brannigan," she said. "Caleb Merrick did not hit that man."

A woman gasped.

"I did."

The quartet's cellist dropped his bow.

"I was driving Caleb's car that night, because mine was at the shop. I was speeding. I saw a man in the crosswalk too late, and I hit him."
