Chapter 4: Tell Nobody

Carolyn woke at dusk with a clear tube under her nose and Caleb's hand wrapped around hers.

"You're real," she said.

"I thought I dreamed you."

"I'm real, Mom."

She looked at the ceiling, the white sheets and the monitor humming beside her.

"This is a nice room. Who paid for it?"

"A friend."

"You don't have friends who pay for rooms."

"I do now."

She turned her head toward the door.

"Where's Chantal?"

Caleb kept his voice level.

"She's at work. She sent her love."

"She's always at work." Carolyn sighed.

"Tell her I said she's too thin. She should eat."

"I'll tell her."

He lifted her hand and held it against his cheek so she would not see his face.

The surgeon came at eight and told them the operation was set for Thursday morning.

"She is strong," the surgeon said.

"She has held on for three years in conditions I will not describe. She wants to live."

"So do I," Carolyn said weakly.

"And I want a cup of tea."

Caleb laughed, and the sound hurt him on the way out.

When she slept again, he went out into the corridor.

Bernard waited by the window with a tablet and a paper cup of coffee he had not touched.

"She is resting," Caleb said.

"Good." Bernard handed him a second cup.

"You have not eaten since the prison."

Caleb drank it standing.

"Tell me what I own."

Bernard did not smile.

"I will tell you in the order that matters. Four years ago you put forty-one thousand dollars into a student startup, and it was the money that kept the lights on."

"It was my father's insurance."

"That startup is Skyward. Three rounds of funding and one public offering later, those shares are eighty billion dollars. The trust has voted them for you, on your written instruction, for three years."
