Chapter 20: February

I stood in my father's kitchen with the phone against my ear.

In the living room, Sam's grandmother was telling Polly's husband he was holding his fork wrong.

"No," I said.

"Ms. Forbes, I haven't explained the terms."

"You don't need to. There's no deal with my daughter in it. Not joint custody. Not visits. Not a photo on her birthday."

"Then he goes to trial," the prosecutor said. "You'd have to testify. So would Mr. Gaines. It would be in the papers for weeks."

"Good," I said. "I've been in the papers before."

She was quiet a moment.

"I was hoping you'd say that," she said.

I went back to the living room and ate two pieces of pie.

Sam looked at my face and passed me the whipped cream.

In December Carter's lawyer tried again.

This time he asked for a weekend a month.

Then one supervised visit a year.

Then a photograph.

I said no every time.

At Christmas Sam's grandmother knitted the baby a pink hat with a pompom the size of a grapefruit.

"For the cold," she said. "Babies lose all their heat through their heads."
