Josiah's POV
My mother has a rule about her kitchen.
Nobody sits down in it with a problem until they have eaten something.
On Thursday morning I sat at her table in Edgehill with a plate of eggs and a biscuit in front of me, and I had not touched either one.
"Josiah Lee," Geneva said, from the stove. "Eat."
"Yes, ma'am."
I did not eat.
She turned the burner off and wiped her hands on her apron and sat down across from me with her glasses on their chain.
"Leeann called me," she said.
"Of course she did."
"She called me the morning after. I have been waiting almost two weeks for you to tell me yourself."
I put my fork down.
"I walked out, Mama."
"I know what you did," she said.
"She stood in front of me with that paper, and a man who had put his hand on her, and the woman who threw her out of her father's house. She asked me to say something. I said I was going to sit in my truck."
"And did you?" my mother said.
"All night."
My mother looked at me for a long time.
She did not say a word.
When I was a boy, that silence could make me confess to things I had not done yet.
